Terraria: The Minishark is mediocre

  1. Tl;dw (or if I wasn't clear):

Anything with 8+ defense is bad for Minishark, and since all (applicable) bosses have more than 8 defense, Musket should be better in most cases. Many enemies (especially the hard ones that you actually care about lol) have close to 8 defense or more, meaning the Musket will do more damage (and for those below, it takes more ammo to kill them and the effect isn't too significant).
Limited mobility in Pre-Hardmode means your small # of accessory slots (5 or 6) is already filled with utility and mobility items that are more important than a bit more damage over the Musket – so it's not too wise to use the Shark Tooth Necklace.
You also can't bullet your way out of the problem. Silver Bullet is not buyable normally (unless you want to wait and spend tons of $ on it during a Blood Moon… why?) and Meteor Shot is post-BoC/EoW, where Molten Gear shits all over the Minishark.

Minishark is very expensive compared to Musket or Undertaker, both to create, reforge, and operate.

The spread of the Minishark is a serious problem even at medium distance. It'll miss demon eyes within striking range, while the Musket never misses. Musket also has 11% CC vs 4% (which is taken care of in the Desmos)
    It has worse reforges
I'm looking at it as a pre-boss weapon (which it is). Idk if many of you want to grind 35 gold + reforges pre-boss but that's gonna be tedious lol. After EoC Tendon Bow makes a good alternative (see Desmos in description) and of course after BoC/EoW it's gonna be dead.
This isnt even considering shotguns and stuff

I know Minishark can carry you to WoF, but you probably should be using better things unless you're doing a Minishark only playthrough (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=327TL3RP6d8, rip ad32).
My two cents. Feel free to use whatever. Good night its 1am

  2. It may not be the best weapon but I find it really hard to believe that the musket with its slow rate of fire is better. Perhaps I need to test it myself but you're telling me that the musket is more effective against Cthulhus Eye?

  3. i think it could be rebalanced to have built in armor penetration, like the bubble gun in remix, blade staff, or flamethrower to rework it into a much better option all round. would probably have to nerf damage though.
though it may actually make it too good for pre eoc/boc weapon, so maybe only sell it after eoc/boc?
that way it could an upgrade to the starter guns instead of an awkward, expensive side-grade.

  4. One weapon that is soooo underrated is the paintball gun. It’s basically the mini shark that does more damage and doesn’t use ammo

  5. From what i've seen the only time the Minishark is any good is in Calamity, facing early-game worm bosses. It seems to have a dominant niche, specifically with the AoE Flash Rounds and lots of armor piercing equipment to deal high damage to multiple segments. It's a shame that it had to be modded to be of use, and even then only works on two bosses, one of which might not even be fought in a given run.

  6. most people would say that u dont put warding on almost every item u own but i do cause thats just my play style i like being able to tank everything (also fun fact u can get more defense by putting warding on everything post wof than u can with any of the pillar armors)

  7. Before I watch I want to say that the mini shark is very mid in every one of my gun ranger play through a (now 6.5)
    Edit:
Same conclusion, since I’ve played on either expert mode or master mode (my current play through is on legendary) the defense really hurts the mini shark and makes it nigh useless without banners, at which point why not just use the musket. Although he didn’t mention the boomstick or quad barrel shotgun which in my legendary play through has around double the dps of the musket

  8. I still use against eye of Cthulhu second phase cause of its fast fire right but there are just better options. The nostalgia is what makes me use it so much though

  9. Because it melts the eye?(and king slime but that's just overkill) plus meteor shot makes it literally the best option for skeletron (assuming you dont fight queen bee beforehand) obviously you phase it out for phoenix blaster, but it is good for everything beforehand (with the exception of eow and phase 1 boc, you should be using a bow with peirceing ammo for that) not to mention being a good option for the first half of queen bee(second half she has a ton of defense in higher difficulties, and I would recommend boomstick for this)

  10. The boomstick is another gun that you can get at the same time as these 3 and id say personally I have multiple weapons ready for any fight. I agree that as a base weapon with stock musket balls it is mediocre but id say it has some of the best combo pairing with the boomstick. Having a smaller spread weapon for tracking like the mini shark where you dont have to line up every shot perfectly and the high dps for easy hits for when you have easier shots and your close. I agree that alone the mini shark is mid but id love to take a look at what the best ranged weapon combos are.

  11. I tend to prefer weapons with slower attack speed, with same dps. Because of defense. Defense plays a major role.

Recently was playing calamity infurnum, when using a summon with ~10 dmg, i was doing (if i remember) 1-2 dmg a hit to king slime, would take ~10min kill. Would tend to die after 8 minutes. Found another summon with 20 dmg but slower attack speed, and i killed king slime in less than 2 minutes. Idk how much defense king slime has in infurnum, but none the less, slower attack speed is better, (even with same dps), for bosses with defense.

  12. I think you were unfair to the Minishark.
First of all, accessory slots in pre-HM are not scarce at all in my opinion. Lightning Boots, Shield of Cthulhu and any horseshoe balloon are the only things you'll need to progress. This leaves you with 2-3 free slots that can easily be occupied by the Stinger Necklace (just good to have in general) and a Shark Tooth Necklace. Ammo is crucial as well: silver/tungsten bullets or meteor shots make a big difference when paired with the Minishark. Then, get Necro Armor, reforge your accessories to Lucky and your weapon to Deadly/Demonic/Agile and you have a beastly setup that benefits not only the Minishark but all ranged weapons.

But yeah it really needs some rebalancing. A boost to velocity, damage, and a price cut would make it a lot better 🤓👍
