Expert Mode? EASY!!!!
Fun fact
Theoretically it is really easy to start without any weapons or tools at all and here's why:
So you just spawned into the world and got rid of your weapons.
Step one:
Go exploring to find your first weapon, can be anything obtainable through chests.
Step two:
Collect any and every bomb or dynamite you csman find.
Grenades can be a helpful starter weapon too.
Step three:
Blow up stone and ores, if wood can be blown up, do that too.
Step four:
If wood can be blown up, make a crafting bench, if not, find one underground
Step five:
Surely through either the guide or blowing up enemies you've earned yourself some gel. So now make torches and a furnace to smelt your ores.
Congrats, you now have tools and can theoretically go through the game normally.
Also, if you can't blow up regular trees, blow up living trees or, if there's none in your world, blow up a useless underground house
Good thing auto-use is now a basic feature that can be toggled on or off (for weapons that did not have it yet)

One important note is that the sangwin staff got heavily nerfed with the 1.4.4 update as it fixed a bug where the sangwins could hit a target multiple times with contact damage but now it will only hit once’s before returning to you and repeating the cycle
They are still good for the mech bosses but overall the blade staff from queen slime might be a better alternative now

I recommend getting witches broom so you can replace the wings with a damage accessory.

Update for summoners on a world using the CelebrationMk10 seed only i the comment about the Flinx fur coat being the only pre-hard mode summoner armor is technically false as the wizard hat dropped by Tim will give you one extra minion slot

If I'll ever do a summoner-playthrough I'll try to only use the Blade Staff, that means no Stardust Guardian. But you need Luminite for the armor set anyway, so that would only matter for bosses that I would only fight post-Moon Lord (EOL night-version only and Duke Fishron). That's easy enough if I take a Blade Staff from a previous playthrough. It's my favourite summoning weapon and I've never used whips anyway. Come to think of it, Terraria uses whips in the wrong way. Sure, it makes sense that the whips make your minions target a specific enemy, but whips aren't intended to be weapons.
