I intend to put some small rock formations etc in there at some stage. But would like to explore other options as well.

I really like this and don’t think it’s too busy but you should definitely think about adding other blocks besides just mud to break up the floor at bit more. For fauna you could mess around with adding clusters of kelp and dot sea pickles around. As far as reference materials, go on YouTube and search for build videos that deal with water or oceans. You could also try just searching google usually something from Pinterest will pop up. Other than that just browse the creative menu till something sparks your interest.

I think add some cobblestone/andesite/granite/sand for variation for the pool floor. Just my opinion

You could use display entities to add some custom details. These could be rocks, plants, tree stumps etc..
