Last time we talked about Minecraft MatPat made his ENTIRE Minecraft Timeline that spanned throughout the early days of Ancient Builders up to current times! Today’s episode is about a different ancient discovery… the Sniffer! The Minecraft Sniffer is a peculiar creature, and one that actually has a far more interesting past than you’d think…

  1. Heya , just a south african here letting ya know that that Red Hot Poker plant is localy called the Vuurlilie (sounds like fear lily) which translates to Fire Lily from Afrikaans directly

  2. Really fun theory! Tom is killing it.

My only note would be that a major selection pressure for smaller creatures would be available food. Larger creatures require more food. Smaller Sniffers are easier to keep and raise because they're less difficult to feed. Plus, food scarcity from the warming Nether and rising sea levels would already favor smaller organisms. Some would have to have made it to the Overworld, because of the fossils, but there could credibly have already been much smaller Sniffers for the Builders to breed.

One explanation could a phenomenon related to neoteny—where organisms retain traits associated with juvenile stages of life, like how mature axolotls still have gills rather than developing into fully land-based salamanders. The Sniffer as we know it could stop at a sort of middle stage, where it achieves many of the same functions of the Giant Sniffer, including the ability to reproduce, while retaining the smaller size of the juvenile Snifflet, vastly reducing their need for food.

  3. I've always thought the fossils in the nether were the bodies of what Ghasts were before they died (Ghasts spawn most plentifully in the Soul Sand Valleys, which is the only place the fossils spawn). What if… Ghasts are the ghosts of the ancient giant Sniffers?

  4. I think calling the fishermen a "tribe" is inaccurate. What tribe can produce so much CO2 that the water rises 10+ meters?
I would call them a civilization.

  5. Do a theory on the potato April fools update pls, also when 1.21 releases you will have to dig for lore with the trial chambers, breeze, mace and a lot more

  6. I just discovered something!!! I just found out that the "relic" disc actually plays a bit of some music from Minecraft legends… Which could mean that the trail ruins are related to Minecraft legends🤔🤔

  7. What? How is the fungus from the nylium forest present after birth if they haven’t been there? How could something so big fit through a nether portal? I don’t think the nether explanation makes sense.

  8. The overall Minecraft story (and Game Theory about it!) is amazing!
It's crazy cool how in-depth the lore is, and how deep they've made it.

  9. I think the stuff on the Sniffer's back is leaves or moss. Also the Sniffer's diet seems to be plants instead of fungus, and there's no plants in the nether. Also, sniffers can't dig up anything on any blocks that generate in the nether.

  10. The only part I disagree with is why the sniffers shrunk. You guys even said it yourselves, they were bigger than ender dragons. Since all of the skeletons are so big, not just the sniffers’, maybe something happened to the atmosphere similar to our own. We don’t see Megafauna anymore because of the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere. I think exploring down that path with Minecraft would be very intriguing

  11. Who would've thought that BBC Earth and (pre-2000's) History Channel could go together so smoothly?

Also, I just love the idea of the Sniffer species having such a dramatic past, yet the modern Sniffers in the game are just obliviously vibing.
