Why I NEVER use the Shield of Cthulhu

The Shield of cthulu is quite possibly the most beloved accessory in Terraria it seems like everywhere you go everyone loves this thing people swear by it using an accessory slot on it until at least post planta it’s so ubiquitous that it just becomes expected if you’re

Playing on expert mode you put it on the moment you kill the eye and almost never take it off that ubiquitousness is what makes it so difficult explaining to people that I can’t stand it I hate the shield of cthulu I would rather have no accessory than have this thing equipped

I never use it have no desire to use it and just see it is some bonus gold but SB The Shield of cthulu allows you to dodge by going horizontally quickly it’s a great way to avoid attacks and it comes at a time when you don’t have good

Accessories why wouldn’t you equip it there are multiple grievances I have with the shield but the biggest one is this Terraria Dash keybind sucks it does double tapping a direction is an awful activation mechanism most games have dedicated Dash buttons Terraria doesn’t and you can’t rebind it to something

Else it’s not like it’s difficult to activate the problem is it’s too easy to activate I can’t stand accidentally dashing being locked into a movement that I did not want is infuriating even more so if it’s detrimental when I move I tap A and D all the time they’re quick

Little adjustments getting a little closer to hit enemies getting a little out of range of an attack getting to the right spot when building a platform it’s second nature a bunch of tiny movements to let me do things smoothly if I have the shield of cthulu equipped I will

Activate it and get sent somewhere I don’t want to be it’s not that it happens during boss fights when you’re actively trying not to do it you can avoid it it’s the moment when you aren’t thinking about it that it happens and I hate it with a passion but that’s not

The only problem with the shield just the one that I find most annoying even if Terraria was given a dedicated Dash keybind I still wouldn’t use the shield it simply isn’t useful to me there are three main selling points of the shield it allows you to move horizontally

Quickly it lets you bounce off enemies and get eye frames and it lets you reach full speed on mounts immediately well there are plenty of ways to move horizontally personally I’m quite fond of grappling hooks by using a hook and jumping before you reach what you grapple you’ll give yourself a burst of

Speed this has the advantage of being extremely controllable and omnidirectional I don’t need a dash because I don’t struggle to get out of the way of attacks without it it is more difficult to learn to dodge with grappling hooks and it requires moving your Koso which can interfere with

Aiming but it also saves an accessory slot and is much more versatile double jumps are like vertical dashes which I find much more useful than horizontal ones I would rather have a blizzard in a bottle than a shield of cthulu the blizzard is much more controllable and versatile that controllability and

Versatility is what’s key here The Shield is not controllable it’s a predetermined Dash with a set speed and distance it’s clunky unwieldy and just doesn’t feel good to use for me when it comes to bouncing off enemies I just think this is pretty useless there’s

Never really going to be a time when I allow an enemy to get close enough to use it I have good situational awareness The Shield can Bonk off of queen bee and Duke fishron which is useful but it’s not like those bosses can’t be dodged otherwise queen bee gets too fast to

Bonk off of consistently as she gets new death and fishron is not difficult to dodge with good Mobility it’s a solution for these bosses but I already have one being good at dodging and as far as mounts I just don’t really use landbased mounts much and when I do I don’t need

The acceleration help so the shield has a bad key bind doesn’t do anything I can’t achieve without it and takes an accessory slot accessory slots are valuable there’s so much stuff to play around with that could be a MAG luminesence which gives fantastic horizontal mobility that feels

Incredibly smooth it could be a double jump or an extra frog leg type accessory the Ascension bonus you get from them does stack as of 1.4.4 extra emblems a pygmy necklace a star Veil a quiver you have great options none of this is to say that the shield of cthulu can’t be useful

Obviously a ton of people use it and love it if you like it more power to you but I don’t I don’t need it I don’t want it and I don’t want to keep explaining that feel free to use it but whenever you see me not using it this is why n

mm yes I would like to waste my accessory slots. please use my demon heart to bring me back to how many accessories I would have had in classic

  1. I totally agree with you, I am terrible at using the shield, and if I want to dodge I would rather set up a keybind for switching to the rod of discord in my hotbar, and it is super annoying to accidently have knockback with it on some enemy I didn't notice, which takes my attention away, causing me to not focus and get killed

  2. I wish you could combine some expert accessories with other accessories. Like a mix of the ankh shield, frozen shield, and shield of Cthulhu would be awesome though op.

  3. For me, the grappling hook is the biggest mobility upgrade in the game, even moreso than hermes boots. I far prefer its versatility over the shield's dash, and I can't stand giving up an accessory for it when the grappling hook gives me the option to dash WITHOUT an accessory.

  4. After having some issues with the shield during the Wall on my current Master summoner run (first time I've ever fully dedicated a character to summoning and I don't think I'll be trashing on it ever again, it's definitely a tough class to play but it's really fun), I can vibe with this sentiment a lil more
The Shield does have its value in pre-HM where you're not really afforded many options, let alone for mobility, but it can be a fair bit more problematic than it may initially seem against hordes or bosses with minions (read: the Wall's Leeches), and there's generally way better options after the Wall
My current build is running Terraspark, Myth Charm, Worm Scarf (formerly Moon Charm until I thought about it a bit harder), Ankh Shield (will switch to Frozen when I get the chance), Flame Wings, Summoner Emblem (previously Power Glove but then I thought about it again), and Magiluminesce – the delay on hitting top speed does hurt a bit without the dash but I'm growing accustomed to it and I've got a Blessed Apple backing me up anyways

  5. mods like calamity have actually been adding dash keybinds for this exact reason
also hard disagree because game just feels sluggish and odd without a dash to help change direction

  6. Can't believe you didn't mention how the self-knockback can get you stuck and killed if you try to dash while you're inside a boss. That's the dealbreaker for me.

  7. Haven't experimented enough outside of it but I will. It felt good in prehardmode but hardmode has wings for movement. And boostertracks if you want my insanest possessed hatchet vs moonlord strategy.

  8. I hate double-tap dash on mobile, it's fine on pc, but on my phone with joystick… I hate it, I also hate double tap jump, so I turn it off, so I decided to just use hooks as for some reason it was easier for me than double tap dash

  9. Death by sucking at pushing same key 2 times fair opinion but I like rouge likes with that kind of shit nothings new and off but that’s me you can hate it and it’s cool

  10. that is why I only use SoC when I play with mods that add a shield accessory slot and a dash keybind (except calamity as it gives you better shield options really quickly)

  11. finally someone who gets it, as someone whos starting to warm up to the shield of cthulhu i don't like having to get use to a double tap dash

when i played terraria for the first time, i played on classic so i just got used to microtapping little adjustments for my movements, however whenever i moved into expert and first got the shield of cthulhu i found it incredibly annoying and did not understand why nobody had an issue with it

it's so fucking annoying to be minding my own business and if i double tap d or a for even once my character careens to the other side of the fucking planet, every other game which has double tap as a dash considers it incredibly annoying (ie. mars in isaac) so what makes terraria any different? it's as much of a "SKILL ISSUE XDDDD LOL X3" as it is a shitty input mechanic for a game like this

also the solution of "just unequip it" would basically mean i'm ONLY using it for bosses which at that point i'm barely using it and that spot may as well be replaced with some other accessory i'll have up 24/7 like a horseshoe balloon for some bonus mobility (i'm doing a run currently with a ranger build so i don't really have to worry about a lot of class specific accessories so i'm able to have a lot of mobility within my accessories)

all it needs is for dashing to have a separate keybind (with the option to have it on double tap, if you're weird ig)

  12. Just install any mod to rebind the dash to a specific key. Fargo's Mutant mod or Helpfull Hotkeys for example. And magiluminescence is just SoC for lazy people. The main advantage is the instant horizontal movement direction change without any contitions. It's faster than both magiluminescence and hook. And you can spam it to have same speed increase in the long distances as the amulet.

Also, I woudn't call vanilla really hard even on master more so all the bosses can easily be beaten underprepared if you know what are you doing and this debate makes no sence.

  13. Something that would be really interesting would be making dashes a type of hook. Basically, You put SoC in your hook slot, and now the hook bind can let you dash in any direction, but dashing up or down is only half as effective. Then pressing E again does a basic short range hook that lets you cling to things. It'd also be cool to see normal hooks get more velocity to compete with the new dash hooks.
