How does this weapon hold up in Terraria 1.4.4? The Heat Ray. In this video, I take a look at this post Golem magic weapon which has received a ton of buffs and nerfs in its lifetime. The question is, in the current version of Terraria (1.4.4) does it hold up and actually have a reason to obtain? Previously this weapon was already rather forgotten and after it’s functionality been significantly changed, it’ll be interesting to see if after all these updates its worth farming Golem for. Lets take a look!

  1. They either need to buff this weapon in the next update again, or rework it so its more interesting because I think this is the most boring looking weapon for mages at that stage of the game!

  2. In mage playthroughs, I've always used the Heat Ray as a side-weapon for high single-target DPS, while carrying around something that has piercing for general use.

  3. The heat ray is one of my favorite middle ground hardmode mage weapons for crowd control. It’s got very good damage and if I remember correctly it has infinite pierce.

  4. In my opinion if nothing else the Heat Ray is massively overshadowed by the Staff of Earth considering both of these weapons drop from the same boss and the Staff of Earth both does well against bosses and excels against many targets. If you don't manage to get the Staff of Earth or any other better weapons then the Heat Ray is great I'm sure but for me I felt no need to use it considering my better options. I agree that the complete lack of pierce really kills this weapon for me, I was somewhat excited at first until I saw it hitting only one target.

  5. I remember the release version of this (before they added a mana cost). It was disgustingly strong due to how spammable it was and easy it was to fit into any playstyle. Rip it and Vampire Knives. Also making it single target and buffing damage doesn't particularly help.

  6. Make it like it's source. More like the last prism, with lower damage and a fire effect. Maybe have it charge for a short moment like the laser cannon. Still pierces, but only a few enemies, however, it should do good enough damage so it can take those few out consistently to hold a line. It can leave a residual effect on blocks it touches, letting it have an effect inside a room, even if it's only a block of inside reach.

  7. It's goated in multiplayer. You can just hide in a corner and click on the boss sprite on the minimap 😛

  8. What if it was just a single beam weapon, like the prism or laser cannon, but with no charge up and no piercing. Maybe it could have its own melting debuff that stacks making it a very powerful single target weapon

  9. I think it would be interesting if they buffed the heat ray further into single target damage by making it basically a constant beam that unlike other beam weapons doesnt pierce
