I think the despawn happened with how the cultist is programmed, basically anything cant target him naturally other than the player directly shooting or swinging at him when the illusion ritual is in process, and since dg despawns when there's nothing to target, he despawns upon cultist using the duplicate attack.

DG will always win. Pure and simple. One, he can one shot the player, no matter what armor you wear. Secondly, he's made to be completely invulnerable. Like NOTHING can hurt him, period. A test on this was already done, and the DG just…can't be hurt. So, while he only spawns if you try and go into the dungeon before Skeletron, he's still the strongest enemy in the game.
