  1. About my take of what is happening to minecraft… I think its always about the people making the videos and if they hit a new trend or not. And also mojang is making it harder for everyone

There is no new fresh content. No hate but yours is very standard and not controversial, doesnt matter if I watch it today or in ten years, but attention is where you have the fresh content.

Hermitcraft and its spinoffs are getting boring, speedrun content was known to be a niche trend, controversy made dream dissapear (who cares if he cheated or not?), updates aren't being a hit, most hot videos are talking against mojang new ruling trying to make the game a kids game, 2b2t videos were a trend. There is just no interesting content to priorize watching.

  2. If I were you Jordan, I'd make another channel that's shorts exclusive because I think that the algo takes a channel into account instead of individual videos.

  3. Im here for CaptainSparklez, not for minecraft. Minecraft has become really stale to me so the only reason i would watch it is because i like the creator as a person not for his content alone

  4. Personally I think one of the main drivers behind long form minecraft content is story. That’s why all of the multiplayer smps tend to do so well, because in addition to the collaboration between creators you also have the story to keep them interested. That’s also why I suspect mianite had such an impact, because it had the lore to keep people interested plus the comedy with each creator’s interactions to make the lulls between story moments still fun

  5. The lack of important or even interesting content being added to the game is definitely a big reason why the game's viewership is in a lull. It means longform content is not going to do as well as shortform content because most people aren't very interested in investing so much viewing time in a game they don't play.

  6. When it comes to Minecraft content I see it in two different forms. Movie form is heavily edited, hours of footage (for example, the whole playthrough in one video, usually with a voiceover) and the podcast form , casual playthrough, little to no edits, where you don't have to watch, but you can quickly rewind if something happened.
Shorts would then be for the highlights, unless you make Minecraft facts or something.
I still think it would be cool to have such movies of the whole series here as well. I see it as a missed opportunity.

  7. I think it's a combination of factors. I think Minecraft is in a lull bc none of the recent updates feel as big or revolutionary as e.g the Nether or the Village & Pillage update so there haven't been as many shake-ups to draw attention. But also content is shifting towards 2+ hour streams and <1minute shorts. The 20 minute videos I like seem to be a dying breed.

  8. I enjoy the long form content. I don't have much time to tune into your streams on Twitch, but I always watch the vods that go up on Captain Sparklez 2. I, in recent months, started to consume more short form content, especially on instagram reels, and I can confirm I have no idea or interest in who is making the content. This was more like an experiment, and I realized I don't enjoy it nearly as much. It feels like when you're in a waiting room in a hospital or something but no internet and you wanna kill time with a very uninteresting game on your phone. That's what short form content feels like to me (I'm 21)

  9. I would personally say it's the original demographic of YouTube has aged and the new generations prefer short form content as someone in Their mid 20s I know a lot of people around me have shifted away from YouTube and more or less use it as a tool looking to lean rather than for gaming content I personally prefer long form content as I often have it on in the background

  10. "From the age of 10 to 23"
    CALLING ME OUT, MAN

But, seriously, as far as the question of the video goes, I think it's both. The age of minecraft is definitely showing- there's no game quite like this one as far as vitality goes, but it only goes so far. I used to watch so many people play this game, but you're the only one I do anymore.
At the same time, though, I feel that the reduction in attention span of the modern generations has definitely hurt this game. Minecraft survived up until now because it was the king of longform content, which was the king of YouTube. I'd still love to watch adventure maps if those were relevant anymore, but it's not about that. It's about highly edited, non-stop content. You can really see how we've transitioned from the RPG to the Gacha in terms of popularity. Stories take too long to pay off, so it's more about the highlights.

To be fair, it's not just the "new kids" causing this. As the original lovers of the game age, they- we- lose the time we once had. I still have significant free time, but there's so many other things I have/need to do nowadays, that I have to pick and choose what I want to watch. Not every video can make the day's list- and even those that do might not actually get watched until days later, if ever. If I'm not feeling like watching many videos today, then they might as well have never been posted.

So, I guess, moral of the story is that times are changing and always will be. It's not quite "adapt or die" but it kinda is, too.

  11. It doesn't matter where Minecraft is at on YouTube, I'll always enjoy watching cap play Minecraft maps, been watching more complete play throughs on the 2nd channel too

  12. My theory is that people who watch shorts simply don't know how to turn their phone sideways,
so the moment a long video is played they are like "why is everyone on the wall, I don like it" and go away.

  13. hi captainsparklez i am 20 and never really watched you when i was younger but obviously was aware of you as a small gamer. today i keep your maps playlist saved because i like playing maps but im busy and sometimes am too tired to be playing/looking at a big screen. your entertainment is very accessible!

  14. When it comes to my experiences: I like to watch content that's exciting so I tend to stay away from stuff like your all the mods series because a lot of it is just sticking around the base. I prefer long form content that's about an hour-2hours in length and when I do watch shorter videos (like 20ish minutes) I prefer those to be more frequent. So that's why I haven't been watching as much of your content lately. I really really enjoyed your create series though and I'd love to see more vids like that.

As for Youtube as a whole, the recent minecraft updates, while they've been great updates, have been light on content, and mods are stagnating too. There's not a lot of new and exciting things drawing in the younger crowds, as a lot of the new fantasy mods feel samey and most enjoyers of long form content like more laid back stuff, and have probably settled in to uploaders that they like. I do think the effects of short-form content are overstated though. Tiktok and Youtube shorts can't fill in the gap between 1 minute videos and livestreams due to their nature, so I think as a whole mid-length content will always have a pretty safe spot on Youtube. I can't really say much more than that, because I've stopped watching virtually all gaming content except yours, and while I know Markiplier and Jacksepticeye aren't producing as many vids as they used to, and DanTDM has expanded his content and reduced uploads as well, I don't know as much about gaming as a whole on Youtube.

Overall, I think when minecraft live happens on the 15th and 1.21 gets into the online minecraft discourse we'll see a pick up in interest, though I also think minecraft content as a whole is in the beginnings of a lull. 1.20 was the last in a series of updates stretching back to 1.17 about adding all the caves and cliffs stuff, so there's people feeling burnt out on everything, and the pandemic is pretty definitively over in the public consciousness (even though it's still ongoing, people are still getting infected), and on a societal level people have to work more, their dollars aren't worth as much so people don't have as much time to watch things in general.

  15. Idk if this is a popular thing but I'm a bit of a hybrid when it comes to long-form and short-form content. If I'm waiting for something or I happen to have a few minutes to spare, I'll watch short-form content. If I really want to relax and just enjoy an hour or two alone, I'll watch long-form content. If I want to see the creators I support, I'll hop into their livestreams and if I'm searching for something in particular (like a tutorial), I'll favour a video from a creator I know.

  16. I hate how youtube tries to mix long and short form content
because it's like with trash and compost
trash you put into the bin and take it out, you don't want it to overflow so you don't leave it in for too long
compost you want to sit untill it's good to enrich the soil
now you don't need to be a genious to know you don't want to mix them
putting trash into compost will make it bad
throwing compost into trash will make it smell bad
so what I'm getting at is that shorts are trash and get them out of my face
    praise Youtube-shorts Block

I only "enjoy" short form content when I have to kill time
and it's not shorts or tiktok because my trashcan is not big enough for that kind of garbage

  17. Minecraft in specific is one of those games where you can enjoy the content and play it and have tons of fun with it. But at some point you hit a point where it's not as interesting. For me I can have a bout of loving it for months and then can go a full year without even looking at the game. As far as views go I imagine other people hit that same "lull" and then come back to it at a later time.

  18. It's because you can watch 30 shorts in the time to watch a single video, its numbers. Its almost like saying dollar cheeseburgers get sold more than 30$ chipotle bowls or some shit, not a valid comparison

  19. i do think minecraft is at a lull, at least for me i stopped playing for the most part and i only really play when someone invites me to. for me, it’s just that there isn’t much to do anymore honestly.

and hytale is never coming out LMAOOOO

  20. My take on this:
Shorts/Reels/TikTok/Highlights/Clips are tl;dr content that gets to the straight to the point (sometimes out of context).

    Main channel content:

(My assumption) – Captain's goal with the main channel are videos that exceed a certain amount of viewership.
I agree long series would have less views.
One thing that can be a main channel video is highlights from his streams for that week or random loot/crafting with other creators like the one with Iskall (I was laughing on that one). Could change it up and have it be a race with others to the End.

  21. As someone who only watches on YouTube, I think it may be because video titles are so similar I often think I’ve already seen it.

For instance, this is at least the second video that required you to cheat, and I only clicked to watch because I noticed the upload date was recent

  22. short form has exploded and it only makes sense to catch up, short forms could act as "ads" for the long form content, e.g. a short form clip of a new video. It's like how family guy clips means people are more likely to watch family guy if its on the tv

  23. In 2016 I was in the 8th grade so I felt I grew out of the content I watched as a kid – like going from younger shows to older shows, Minecraft YouTubers in my 13 year old brain was for the “younger” kids and I was a “cool teen” so there was that lull. But now I’m in my 20s looking for nostalgia so I disagree. I never watched your channel growing up, never once looked at it as a kid or teen but as an adult I felt nostalgia for the mcyt I used to watch and your channel was recommended & I now watch it regularly. I disagree and believe the next trend will be 20+ yr old viewers like me looking for nostalgia and either go back to mcyts they used to watch or find ones they didn’t who have been around just as long. I think both long form & short form vids work, just that short form vids are easier to “consume” so they get more views
