Is this obscure Terraria weapon worth your time? The Venom Staff. In this video, we take a look at this rather unpopular mid Hardmode mage staff that is in fact an upgraded version of the earlier Hardmode ‘Poison Staff’. Frustratingly, getting your hands on the Poison staff can be a nuisance though, requiring your to farm Black Recluses. The question is, after all is done, is the Venom staff worth the effort, and just how far can it take you in the game? Enjoy!

Ah the Black Recluse, another Terraria enemy with built-in Aimbot
i didnt know that the poison staff was actually rare because i usually play summoner and grind in the spider biome anyways. usually i have like 2-3 of them in every world
You should try out the spirit flame. It's really strong
f you like adding some debuffs for extra damage,, quick swapping to this could be useful believe. mean that's if you get lucky, but just like the flamethrower for ranger, it's great damage when it's craftable but drops off compared to other weapons later in the game, however being able to swap for some extra dps through the hellfire debuff is useful.

I think this weapon is kind of like the golden shower. You just apply the debuff and switch to your main weapon.
I always get this in a mage play through because I’m trying to find the hair dresser anyways
Honestly i love this weapon it's really good against large groups and obtaining it isn't too hard, all you really need is something that can hit enemies through walls like the crystal vileshard then just build a wall and you can safely farm black recluses, it's the perfect weapon for killing plantera as mage

Back when it had infinite projectile duration, and was affected by gravity, I'd say it's Hella worth it.
They nerfed my fun pvp spam weapon and I'm salty enough about it to make a lake a sea.
I got the poison staff easy sooo
im currently using it and if you encounter a spider biome or 2 on your hellevator then i think its worth it i got the posion staff pretty fast and effortlessly
go to plantera weapon for me tbh
I love using the Venom Staff, don't know why, I jsut think it's fun
Currently doing a mage playthrough, venom staff + golden shower absolutely demolishes plantera, killed her first try, then fought her 2 more times after that and won both times.
This was in expert mode, idk if it would work on master mode
When you farm black recluses anyway for the spider armor and the spider staff, the poison and venom staff are a no-brainer
I use the venom staff for plantera all the damn time he’ll I go out of my way to get poison for the twins if I have no alternative available
In my opinion the venom staff is quite good as not only dose it have good damage but it also makes fighting enemy's interesting, and when it comes to fighting groups i think the wide spread of the projectiles helps alot, i would recommend this staff

I've used the venom staff before, and I didn't really see it great. While it inflicted the acid venom debuff, I found its damage to mana cost off. I had several other magic weapons dealing the same damage, sometimes more, for a lower mana cost. The venom staff costs some ~25 mana to use and dealt 44 damage, versus the cursed flames, which costed significantly less at only maybe ~6 mana, but also dealt around 55 damage. It was also harder to obtain than the cursed flames, meaning I tossed it away after a few boss fights with it.
And for a pre plantera weapon, it combos so well with specter armor for some reason, so I tend to use the venom staff a lot, sometimes all the way to cultist (only sometimes).

THIS WEAPON IS BROKEN, from my experience. it may be all average in all noted respects but the spread means its hard to miss an enemy, and with endurance potions it can carry your up until pillars .

i did a mage playthrough with a friend and the venom staf pairs fantasticly with spectre armor and can be used up to cultist
I got poison staff early and gave it to my mage friend, he said it was good. Then I made the venom staff and he sold it instead of using it (it’s good against planter)
The venom staff was actually my first best mage weapon and it was kinda good
I remember using the poison staff in my first terraria playthrough, I was pleasantly surprised seeing that it could be upgraded after the mech bosses. I remember using it until I found the razorblade typhoon lol. If you are lucky enough to find a poison staff I would highly recommend upgrading it to a venom staff and trying it out, it's a cool weapon.
I used the venom staff as (I’m pretty sure) my main weapon around plantera when I played through the game for the first time, so it’s special to me
Black recluses arent that much of a pain and farming them is quite easy and quick if you know what you are doing, so yeah, its worth it.
I used it as a summoner, it doesn't sound like a good idea but sometimes whips and my summons sucks ass so I just use this just for grinding and stuff
I just use it as a debuff attack when doing bosses as a mage, like Golden shower. The acid venom is a pretty nice buff to dps
the black recluse is hard to deal with at first but after a few deaths you can fairly easily set up a farm in a way where they won't be able to damage you but you will be able to damage them (for example attacking from above works fine enough as well , they may be able to climb up walls they can only climb up to a certain point)
so i don't think it's that bad to get , and 2.50% chance isn't that bad either when compared to A LOT of other weapons in the game

I remember getting this weapon when grinding for a spider set. and i used this a little bit too.
I got a jungle key dropped by a black recluse while grinding for this, I got the poison staff 20 minutes later…

Poison staff is awful, but i think venom staff is an excellent choice against plantera
Something rather important that you missed out on. Not all sources of Acid Venom apply the effect for the same duration. The Venom Staff can apply acid burn to entire groups for 30 full seconds. The next closest duration are venom bullets/arrows at 10 seconds. So not only does the staff apply Acid Venom in a cone at a distance, makeing it easy to hit with… but it also lasts 3 times as long. Not to mention that you can have the Venom Staff on your hotbar without commiting your ammo slot to venom.
Basicly, every time you hit a boss with this weapon, you can put it away and use something else for 30 seconds, and it will still be dealing damage. Not a tonn of damage (900 over 30 seconds) but it's damage you wouldn't have been dealing otherwise, and is very easy to hit. It's essentially a support weapon that can still get the job done against relevent bosses when left alone.
