Do the insect killing task from the guild. You’ll get the Insect Head after claiming it from the old man, which will be your best weapon for a while.

Break every crate and box/barrel you find. One of them has a good chance to have a wooden club. You can spam the heavy attack of the club (on all platforms / input methods) by holding in the special attack keybind while spamming the light attack button.
Crates can also give things like glow rings, magnet rings, coal and cave carrots, cave carrots are great energy sources if you run low.
Clubs are insanely OP, and the wooden club even at base attack does a LOT of damage.
If you find a wooden mallet, don’t get rid of that either.
Daggers are kinda pants. You get new weapons as you descend floors and level up combat.
You can also fish up weapons like a forest sword or a Neptune’s Glaive in treasure chests. Or get the insect head from Gunther for killing a bunch of bugs. 1.6 buffed the insect head by a lot actually.

just keep going in the caves. you useally get better equipment as you go deeper, and the creatures don’t do much damage until you get to the red caves

Either the Insect head from the Grub-Slaying quest. Once you get down to floor 70, you can spend a bit of time farming the enemies there until one of them drops a much better weapon that should carry you until either the next one or even until the bottom of the mines.
