I wish this was the default, considering that you have to build the whole railroad and with elytra you can just fly wherever you want

This is kinda how it should be honestly. The elytra is fast and requires no infrastructure other than maybe a gunpowder and Sugarcane farm if you feel like burning through fireworks.
Railways shouldn’t become less than useless the moment you’re get either a horse or an elytra given how many resources you need in order to make one.
