I'm not saying that it behaves like sculck, but it has those same infection take over vibes. It feels like the pale moss is infecting a part of the dark oak biome.

I would assume so. It seems to have infected the Illagers as well, making them pale compared to the villagers. It could be an experiment gone awry that created the creaking, which is why the Illagers are scared of it.
