If you see a suspicious eye look use it. It will give you night vision for 20 minutes. Also the goblin tinkerer will scam you.

go to the big castle on the opposite side of the jungle, theres free starter loot inside, also if youre in the underworld, kill the demons with the dolls and drop them in lava, free loot will fall from the sky

Guide is very useful, he gives nice tips and shows everything you can craft. No need to use wiki necessarily if you use him and explore things thoroughly.

Talk to the Guide (the npc that you start with) for tips. You can show materials to him in his craft menu and he will tell what it crafts into and the craft station necessary.

Go mining until you find gravitational potions, then use them to find sky islands which can have a very good starter sword called the star fury

Mine metals, gold and platinum are usually rare.
Make a slime crown, kill slime king.
If you need help you could use the wiki.

Build crafting workstations close to chests that you store items with the “Material” tag on them. You can use a crafting station with items from a chest if you have it open instead of just the items from your inventory.
Take materials to the guide so he can tell you what they can be used to craft.
Buy the sandwich from the skeleton merchant in caves if he’s selling it.
Get a hook as early as you can and keep bombs and ropes on you when you’re caving early and mid game. There are better ways to mine and climb.
Don’t be afraid to try things. Play-styles are varied and fun.
Don’t be afraid to use ammo or potions. Experiment.
Sort items into chests however you want, but use the “Quick sort items into chests” once you’ve settled into a system to save so much time. You can rename chests which shows up when you mouse over
Favorite items you don’t want to lose
Fishing isn’t as bad as the memes may make you think
Your bestiary will show you what items can be dropped by things you’ve killed if you don’t want to wiki everything. The wiki can potentially feel like it’s spoiling the discovery if you’re playing for the first time, but is an amazing resource when you’re ready for it

You get more NPCs over the course of the game, but they’ll only move in if you have an adequate house! It can be helpful to frontload a lot of building so you don’t have to go around checking if a specific NPC is ready to spawn yet. The townsfolk like some people and biomes better than others, and that impacts their prices.
If you don’t want to trial-and-error it, there’s plenty of guides for optimally happy housing 😛

The official Wiki is your best friend. It has all the info you need and is pretty good about keeping bigger spoilers near the bottom.

The wiki (not fandom) is your friend. It’s one of the only ways to make sense of some of the games complex crafting and progression
