One of the recent updates changed this as a parity feature I believe. Once you’re +30 blocks from the map edge it turns to a dot, no way to change it.

You are south east on the map, so you have to go northwest to fully appear on it

it means you’re outside this map, travel northwest and you’ll appear on it eventually

In the Bedrock edition, there are two different types of empty maps, the locator map and the normal map, and the normal map does not have this point, but if you are playing java edition, such a feature is not available

It’s a dot because **you’re off the map.** An arrow would be pointless because you’ll always know, in this particular case, that you are south-east of this map. Use the sun or moon to find North-West and start walking
