I love Stardew Valley, but when critically thinking about the game, I always feel like this part is a nasty thorn in my side.

I agree 100%. I also think there's a ton of potential in the Joja line of progression being much, much worse for the people in the valley. Like let's go ahead and just put Pierre and Gus out of business completely and see how the people are hurt by that. What would they do after their stores are closed? No idea. but I think they wouldn't know what to do either so that could also be something cool to explore
