I think there is still an argument despite the claws existing. For instance, when starting hardmode, it's a bit hard to get a foothold, especially on Expert or Master. However, one thing you probably have, is speed.
With extra speed, you are able get quickly go from tree to tree, ripping down forests quickly, in the earlier hardmode. Chainsaw is better here.
While Axes may do more flat damage, this makes crit builds more inconsistent, while a chainsaw will have more opportunities to proc crits. However, I doubt many melee builds would prefer this as an option, quite frankly. Axes having a better swing range is the main benefit to their melee. So, this makes them pretty even, as you highlighted.
Personally, I would always stick to a tool's niche, and the chainsaw does best for where it's used in the game. It's also new and interesting, as you've probably just used axes until this point.
