It’s just an easter egg that happens once per save. Eventually, something will hatch out of it, leaving the broken capsule behind. Doesn’t affect the game, and you don’t really see what it is.
If you put the capsule in a chest, it will never hatch.

Ahh ya that’s the strange capsule. If you set it down and don’t mess with it, eventually the alien inside of it will roam the world. It doesn’t do any harm! You can see it in the town square I think and by the bus stop in one of the top corners of your screen, but keep an eye out because it’s quick!
