Stardew Valley Review – SpaceHamster

I don’t think I’ve ever said this before but I’m actually a huge fan of the Harvest Moon series there’s something super satisfying about starting from nothing and building up your floor Ming Empire my family arity with the games is mostly through the original for the Super Nintendo and harvest moon 64 and recently a new Harvest Moon inspired game came to the PC called stardew valley i’ve been following and anticipating this game’s release for years so let’s take a look at it why don’t we alright this is our character his name hammy he also likes gaming and long walks on the beach but that’s not relevant to what we’re talking about right now we’re ready to start a super amazing adventure as a farmer nothing could be bad about this grandpa grandpa no I just started playing so it looks like grandpa isn’t doing so hot and he wants to give us a gift but since we’re not old enough yeah he gives us a letter and tells us to open it when I quote there will come a day when you feel crushed by the burden of modern life yeah we’re then shown our future self 20 years later working for a company called Jojo it doesn’t look like these guys are all that great to work for because they’re also the guy a couple cubicles back from you is a cowboy Eddie licks his lips a lot it’s weird also there is dead people they should probably clean that up what do you know that thing that grandpa said is true and hammy is struggling with the burden of modern life so now we open up the letter and it turns out to be the deed to a farm in stardew valley this was my most precious gift of all and now it’s yours I know you’ll honor the family name my boy so we hop on a bus and head towards stardew valley and our new lives once we get off the bus were then greeted by Robin who’s the carpenter of the town and she agrees to take us to our farm all right I can’t wait to see grandpa’s greatest gift uh is this a joke grandpa hey say nothing about it about this in your letter about I’m just gonna be a piece of crap grandpa grandma I mean I kind understand that’s kind of the point but I’m still mad about it okay so it’s a little bit of a fixer-upper but we’ll get to that we then meet Lois the town mayor who gets easily offended by an obviously sarcastic joke tells you a couple things about the town and then walks away okay bye Lois we wake up the next morning the shekels of our former job broken and he thought to himself it’s time to start a new life but first I’m going to watch some TV now so you might be asking me at this point hammy what exactly is stardew valley it’s a game where you farm and do farm things well to be fair that’s not exactly all you do if you had to put a label on it which people already have been doing you would call it something like a country life simulator which would be a pretty accurate representation of everything you think it would be first up you have farming this is the main part of the game in where you’ll probably be spending most of your time the burdens of modern life mean one thing gotta make my gut God make my grandpa was right about making money wait that’s not what he said never mind he might not have said that but it is important you got to make money so it’s time to start clearing the farm out hoeing out the ground and planting our own crops there’s a large variety of things that you can plant some taking longer than others and most of what you can grow will change depending on which season you’re in you can even craft your own items like the preserving bin which allows you to pickle your own vegetables or turn your various fruits into jams and once you’ve made enough money you can even move on to different animals like chickens or cows who’ll get mad at you because you forgot to feed them just like real life it’s all pretty nonlinear you can do whatever you want whenever you want there are some things that this game wants you to do but you never have to do any of it I mean if you wanted to you could just sit on your farm all day I don’t know why you would want to do that but you can and that’s all that matters one of those things occurs once Luis shows you the rundown town center it’s a dilapidated building that nobody has bothered to take care of after you have a conversation with Luis and have a look around the building you’ll find this strange scroll that appears to be in a different language eventually at NBC known as the wizard will contact you and have you drink something that lets the essence of the forest from the your body so with very little hesitation and without knowing what’s actually in the drink you take a drink you go on an acid trip and get a little sick but now you can communicate with spirit things okay Cheers Foresti hey hey there buddy you want to collect some stuff for us what I mean what’s life without some risk now we can go back to the Town Hall and slowly begin unlocking different collections that get you varying rewards and again you don’t have to do any of it but it incentivizes you to do all the different things the game has to offer in order to unlock the different bonuses once you complete a full package the four sprites which I don’t think anyone else can see besides the wizard will fix something or unlock a new area on the world map for you to explore or use what I’m going to try and not spoil any of that for you guys so let’s talk about something else there’s tons of different things you can do throughout the game it’s not all about farming you can also go fishing just by saying that I’ve pretty much said everything I can about that already it’s an easy way to make money when you have some downtime and you can even hunt down some the more legendary rare fish that are worth lots of money you can also go down into a mine fight enemies and excavate for jewels and ore and anytime you do any of these things for an extended period of time you get better at it you also even eventually get some pretty cool perks that allow you to do things even better giving your character even more customizable options depending on what you want to focus on there’s even some more casual things like holidays that mix it up a little bit throughout the season like this one this one’s called the flower dance festival and I’ve got to find someone to dance with me you can do a few other things at the festival like shop a little bit but the main thing is the dance and I swear to God I tried my very hardest but nobody wanted to dance with me know what screw it I’m going gay excuse me not today okay so I watch the dance from the sidelines this year but next year I’m gonna be dancing you’ll see and then you will well let’s just say that it’s gonna go better next year but I haven’t said what I think the other major part of the game is yet in that is of course the people there are tons of different kinds of people throughout stardew valley like this guy alex do i spy on occasionally and watch work out it’s not weird if you don’t think about it some of my favorite villagers have to be Hayley who’s a total jerk to you pretty much no matter what you do hmm if it weren’t for those horrendous clothes you might actually be cute well joke’s on you Hayley you get weeds for a gift the wizards solely because of this face not because you know he’s his magic or anything George because he’s a grumpy old guy in a wheelchair Abigail because who is that a Super Nintendo I like you that’s it that’s the only reason Sebastian definitely has to be one of the biggest edge lords I know I’m trying to be his friend I swear but he never comes in his room so I can’t give him gifts and I’m trying to be I figured out that he also likes frozen tears you sure would like those Sebastian penny is the girl that I took the most liking to because she’s just so broken and alone she’s essentially the typical Cinderella esque archetype her mom is an unemployed slob who lives in a trailer and gets drunk every night she also constantly makes penny do all the chores around the trailer while she sits around and does absolutely nothing and the mother of the Year award goes to boom yay you did it even though penny comes off as depressed sometimes she still teaches little kids and it’s probably one of the nicest people in the town my perfect woman I can give you everything you deserve how about these cookies that I found in the trash trash cookies talking about penny actually brings up a good point because at the time by making this review there are 10 available bachelors and bachelorettes that you could try today dating isn’t exclusive to either gender either which I’m saying for no other reason then it’s pretty cool inclusivity getting people to like you essentially boils down to getting them lots of gifts each person has their specific likes and dislikes so it’ll probably take you a while to figure all of that out or you know you could use a wiki or whatever I’m not stopping you hey if you become close enough friends with one of the dateable NPCs eventually Pierre the man who runs the general store will sell you a bouquet of flowers that you can use to signify that your day then only only on a dark and rainy day when you have 10 hearts with the person you desired you have to build a secret bridge across the beach you get to another area where an unnamed man wearing a weird hat will sell you Marie pennyways you have to buy for 5,000 gold and bring to the person you love most in the world hmm I’m pretty sure that’s how it usually works wait who are you now I’m married and I can do merry things ha ha ha it’s actually pretty cool to be married in the game you get a bunch of extra dialogue with the characters you’ve chosen and sometimes if you’re lucky they even do your chores for you like today penny just went out and water all my plants so now I can do ever I want you could even eventually have kids yes kids uh which I thought was a pretty nice touch even though all my kid ever seems to do is sleep all right I’m the greatest dad ever I don’t even have to do anything MVP dad MVP dad you did it uh-oh it looks like Penny’s getting a little jealous that I gave some other people some gifts so I heard you secretly gave Maru a gift today do I have to be suspicious of you oh do you mean the gift that I gave Marlowe for her birthday that one if so you totally have to be worried about me get your head out your ass penny oh so how did you know about that that was like two seconds ago and we are by ourselves you know what I don’t care I’m gonna be me dad how’d he take this oh you take this crap I love God gave you a melon you know what I’m gonna go back to the Wizards awesome I hail the wizard some more hey can I use thank you so much for watching my video if you liked the
