Terraria can be very unforgiving at times the smallest mistake can spell out your death so it’s important to do everything you can to improve your survivability one of the easiest and most common ways people improve their chances of survival is to increase their defense that’s

Great and all but what if i told you that they’re wrong what a defense isn’t as great as it’s made out to be and are there any alternatives oh yeah disclaimer uh 3 2 1 done so before i start explaining why defense isn’t good we’ll first have to explain how defense even works

This little icon displays how much defense your character has it can be increased by wearing armor equipping accessories using potions etc depending on the world’s difficulty the effectiveness of the fence will change the values are shown here got all that memorized no alright moving on so based on the examples shown

It seems like defense will be pretty effective i mean on master mode it will reduce damage taken by the trap to near zero which is great why would anyone not want to have the ability to take as much punishment as possible well it’s because of stuff like this

Granted this is a bit of an extreme example but the last thing you want to do in terraria is to take damage especially in higher difficulties sure defense may help you against some of the heftier blows you’ll be taking but not much the difference between getting hit is a summoner

Who has the lowest defense of any class and a warrior who has the highest is pretty negligible against bosses and melee users can only take maybe a hit or two more than a summoner so that’s it then right i’ve shown the flaws of defense and

And yes it’s different from defense unlike defense which is a score that decreases incoming damage by a set amount dr lowers damage taken by a percentage some items that give you dr include wearing a worm scarf beetle armor using an endurance potion and some other stuff so since dr is percentage based that

Well to terraria scrapping defense and going for armor and buffs that will give you the most damage will let you beat things faster which means less time is spent fighting the boss lowering the chance of you messing up and dying if you want you can further increase your damage output

By going to this blue idiot and getting all your accessories reforged to a damage increasing modifier but good luck with that you’ll be getting good reforges only slightly more consistently than my upload schedule

UPDATE: So yeah, looking back, this video makes some bold claims with nothing much to really back it up. I really only made this video because I saw some people considering replacing their wings with a warding shackle which is like… why? So yeah, don’t get mad if this video says some garbage. (Outdated garbage ahahah) I just kind of feel like that defense is super ineffective whenever I play so instead of trying to get good or something, I made a video about it. Funny how that works.

  1. I'd say DR is the general term for reducing damage, so defense, percentage, and dodge chance are subcategories of DR.
    and just like band of regeneration & charm of myths, you can raise dodge chance by equipping both master ninja gear and the black belt, I think.

  2. there also is one unmentioned and often underused type of "DR", regeneration.
    using Squires Great Helm Valhalla knight's breastplate and band of regen, charm of myths, shiny stone, celestial stone, etc. is basically like defense, but its strengths and weaknesses are multiplied, MUCH better with chip damage, but worse with hard hits.

  3. After going through most of the game on expert with just obsidian armor, defense most certainly fucking matters. Can't tell you how many times I was this close to beating a boss, but died shortly after. Queen slime was not kind to me.

  5. Set bonuses are the biggest point of armor because for summoners you can have more summons for melee users it can make their weapons have more range so less hits taken for rangers it can make them fire faster and for mages it can make their mana regenerate faster

  6. if you are playing on classic, high defense is viable because if its about 80 or more most attacks will be doing less than 30 damage and you can just bully bosses

  7. Tankcels seething over dodge chads. Jokes aside I've always viewed defense armors as invasion armors and more unique armors as bossfight armors. The only exception is the solar amor which falls into the "Kill things before they can touch you" category

  8. 1:53 what OK listen I read the description but the defensive stat imo is seesaw the defense between 30-45 defense is pointless and same is with 85-100 which makes me think like this if your class has natural high defense pick appropriate accessories to reflect you aggression using the dozen turtle shell and worm scarf on my melee make make damage negligible bro mech bosses like 1-5 most cases and I can have 120 defense if I want and 17-42 damage reduction versus my summoner which does have that and has 42 defense with its accessories which make a big difference on builds with low defense like 42 going for damage reduction over minion damage is splitting my energy so I below average defense and mediocre damage and bad idea long term

  10. Summoner class is better then any class with mods I gave myself inf minion mod and took like a single minute to beat expert moonlord after spamming stardust dragon staff for 5 mins straight

  11. My defense is so high I literally have tanked Dungeon Guardian, no joke (I play on switch with no mods or plug-ins or anything)

  12. I like adding modifiers to items for builds that lack in that area. For instance, on my summoner character, everything is reforged to warding, as summoners lack defense, and on my ranger build, everything is reforged to quick, as rangers lack movement speed.

  13. You forgot to mention regeneration. Stacking enough defense with enough regen lets you literally face tank the final boss on normal mode. You can just sit in a box with a small pool of honey, making no effort to dodge, and the Moon Lord will be completely unable to kill you. You won't even need to heal.

    Higher difficulties are a different story, but defense reducing the amount of damage you take combined with regen giving your health back effectively means you can make more mistakes more often and still be fine. Defense means your mistake is less costly, and regen means you recover from it faster.

  14. Personally, I don’t like summoner solely due to the low defense. In Master Mode, some enemies can deal well over 500 damage, and the slight bit more defense meelee, ranger, and mage provide over summoner allows them to survive a hit and potentially heal or escape, while summoner gets one shotted.

  15. It's the same reason to wear a helmet when bike riding irl. It ain't gonna make you immune to a truck hitting you but it's at least gonna keep your brains and guts inside, just don't get hit by two trucks

  16. The most of my accessory slots are usually dedicated to movement (except for double jump when I have flight because it messes with me)
    And raw damage boosting stuff
    I definitely play glass Cannon characters a lot
