before you tackle Calamity (if you plan on it, eventually), you should play through Expert Mode off stream. It should go significantly faster once you've got the know how of how to play the game and especially make accessories stronger. The main difference is that bosses will drop more loot in a special bag, and that bosses will be harder to fight against as well as hit harder. Or, well, in higher difficulties EVERYTHING hits harder, even a basic blue slime!

ALWAYS talk to the guide. he is the single most valuable npc to me, and ive beat this game on master mode.
click the happiness tab on npc dialogue to see what they like or dislike. if you make npcs happy, you might get a reward. you won't notice it at first, though ;3
get a few training dummies! if you place them in a line, you can test piercing capabilities on your weapons. i hear the item you need to help craft those was used in the USSR flag.
npcs cannot live in your evil biome. they will literally move out of their house if the evil biome spreads to their house.
king slime is the first boss in the game but nobody gives a damn bout him
the furry sells more things the more animals you discover!
hammers can turn blocks into slopes! this is useful for building, if thats what you like.
you can fish literally anywhere, and theres always unique loot depending on your biome.
theres a strange biome underground on the side of your jungle. i wont say much, but its really pretty!
the map doesnt update unless youre in the area you want to update
