Pots are a useful addition to terraria, of course they were just added recently so theres no way anyone would know how they function
It depends. If we are talking starting with no tools then yes, it's possible but if we are talking having no tools the entire playthrough then it's not possible
what about torch zombies
Forget getting chances for slime to have torches, get guide just kill one slime then get the coins and you can use the coins to break the pots by placing them down onto pots
You can also play during Christmas and try your luck with Presents. The Candy Cane Pickaxe can start your playthrough, while the Candy Cane Sword, Star Anise, etc. can help you get there.
Actually you can place copper coins
Pots drops bombs, zombie with torch can be killed by the Guide, get ores to make tools, no npc needed
or, (ahem) mining ore
You can also get webs and place then on pots

What about the zombies with torches at night. They have more chance to have a torch
Kill a skeleton with the guide, get a bone pickaxe, break a wooden house
Why wait for slimes to drop torches to get bombs from pots, instead of getting bombs straight from the alime
Or let the guide kill any slime, collect the coins, and break the pots with coins. Way simpler.

There’s an easier and faster way of getting tools rather than waiting for the merchant, just go to the desert, blow up enough cactus, and make a cactus work bench and a cactus pickaxe.
Or you just take the bombs to a cactus and get a cactus pickaxe.
