I mean its free extra dps. Free dps is never a bad thing.

Most weapons in Terraria are designed to be just an option for players, if they get such weapon. You don't need Nimbus Rod to kill Destroyer, but if you get one at random – that's an option. You don't need Uzi, but if you get lucky and obtain one – that's an option. And there are a lot of weapons like that. There are some weapons that you can guarantee getting and weapons that have moderate drop chances without need to grind for hours to get them, and then there are weapons like Uzi or Nimbus Rod, which you might get once every few playthroughs, but they will make your game a little bit different. That's the beuty of Terraria, and it makes it a little bit similar to rougelike (tho the comparison is veeery vague)

The highest honor an item can get is hotbar slot 1: primary weapon.
I find that I never go out of my way for this weapon, but I’ll use it if I happen to get it by luck.
It gets real annoying after the seventh one drops and takes up more space in your inventory whenever you try to pick something up though
I remember being in early hardmode and seeing an angry nimbus. I got the rod and it has been a staple for the rest of my playtrough

No matter what stage I obtain it I use it until I get to the point of defeating the moon lord and when I get better alternatives then I kind of stop using the support weapons as much. Not sure why but I focus purely on the class I chose.

Favourite weapon in the game. No matter what class you play, the Nimbus and Crimson rods are always going to be useful for most of the bosses. They’re just free extra sentry slots honestly
the destroyer should natively be able to destroy player-placed blocks and walls imo
Destroyer is just an awesome boss (my favourite) and its insane how you can just cheese him with literally anything. I feel bad for the destroyer tho.
every episode ends with a weapon spamming montage, just a shame you couldn't do it with the nimbus rod, would've love to see you summon rain on command ;-;
I never bother to farm for it, but I will kill every nimbus cloud I see until I have one while i'm moving around on the surface. With how slow I usually am near the start of hardmode, I usually have one before, or during, the mech bosses and will keep it in my inventory until I have post hard dungeon gear.
